The toy train starts from its first station at Kalka at 656 metres and starts climbing uphill, passing through the 18 stations and reaches Shimla. This train reach Shimla at elevation of 2, 076 metres above in the lap of the Himalayas.
These 18 railway station between Kalka to Shimla are: Taksal (6 km), Gumman (11 km), Koti (17 km), Sonwara (27 km), Dharampur (33 km), Kumarhatti (39 km), Barog (43 km / known for its longest tunnel), Solan (47 km), Salogra (53 km), Kandaghat (59 km), Kanoh (65 km), Kathleegat (73 km), Shoghi (78 km), Taradevi (85 km), Jutoh (90 km), Summer Hill (93 km) and finally, Shimla (96 km).
The highlight of the journey is Barog station, which has the longest tunnel (tunnel No. 33) on the route. Also, bridge number 226 is an architectural marvel that passes over a deep valley surrounded by steep hills on both sides. History & Construction of Kalka – Shimla Toy Train
During the British Raj, the railway was built under the direction of Herbert Septimus Harington between 1898 and 1903 to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India.
The 112 years old heritage toy train, was inaugurated way back in 1903 by Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India.
It indeed is a great example of British Engineering. Even to this day, the controls of the heritage train remain the same as during the British regime right from the signals to the narrow gauge track though the steam engine has been replaced by a modern diesel engine.
The Kalka Shimla Heritage Toy Train is a prime attraction for tourists going to Shimla. The train runs on a narrow gauge rail track and connects many small towns dotted on the Himalayan slopes between Kalka and Shimla.
In the year 2008, the toy train was granted the status of a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It indeed is wonderful to experience this rich heritage.
